About Us


The Elementary Teachers of Toronto (ETT) is the Toronto-local of the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO). The local—the largest in Canada—acts as the representative body for more than 11,000 elementary teachers (K-8) employed by the Toronto District School Board (TDSB).

What we do

ETT is a membership organization that anticipates and responds to the needs of its diverse membership by:

  • Protecting and defending collective bargaining rights
  • Organizing and engaging members through political action
  • Providing support, professional development, and learning opportunities
  • Advocating on behalf of public education, our members, and the students in their care
  • Providing leadership in areas such as anti-poverty, non-violence, and equity

ETT Mission Statement

The Toronto Local shall be a unified, democratic organization of informed professionals which will anticipate and respond to the needs of its diverse membership, as well as advocate for children and public education.

ETT Priorities for 2017-2018

  • Building a movement for high member participation through organizing to effect change within our schools and win what we and our students need in our next round of bargaining.
  • Uphold the principles of fair collective bargaining
  • Engage with educators, parents, and the community-at-large to strengthen and improve public education
  • Stop school closures
  • Advocate eliminating or modifying EQAO standardized tests
  • Challenge the government and the TDSB to address the issue of chronically underfunded Special Education programs and students
  • Fix the funding formula
  • Lobbying the government for the elimination of the School Information Finder website, a site universally condemned by all education stakeholders for its inclusion of sensitive socio-economic information
  • Election involvement
  • Defend workers’ rights
