As an active Anti-racism, Equity and Social Justice Committee, we continuously strive to fulfill our
mission of honouring, supporting, and celebrating excellence in teaching equity. It is our goal to
promote a positive image of teaching and to ensure that equity in education is an integral part of our
profession. This award recognizes individuals who have contributed much to the area of equity by:

• Educating members about cultural, racial, ethnic and religious diversity within the education community and society
• Promoting teaching as a career for under-represented groups in society
• Promoting strategies with students and staff to ensure that school based activities are inclusive
• Encouraging the development of bias-free curriculum materials

The Committee is looking to honour up to two teachers who have made a significant
difference to students, colleagues, schools, and communities. We hope that you will assist us in
celebrating teaching excellence by nominating an educator. The winner of this year’s Excellence in
Teaching Equity Award will receive a $250.00 cash award sponsored by Elementary Teachers of
Toronto.

The award will be presented at the ETT Annual Dinner at the Liberty Grand on June 16,
2010.

The ETT Anti-racism, Equity and Social Justice Committee’s Excellence in Teaching Equity Award

• initiates club(s), workshop(s) and/or community involvement with an equity focus

Three months after the devastating earthquake in Haiti, hundreds of thousands of people remain without adequate shelter, access to health care, clean water and food. While the world discusses “reconstruction” in Haiti, Haitians are asking, “Will there be any, and whose interests will it serve?” Our solidarity with and material support to Haitian working-class, community and peasant organizations are critical to their ability to struggle for a just society and resist neo-liberalism.

“We must rebuild Haiti. But it must be done in a way that meets the needs of workers and the common people. Strong and effective public services are vital for Haiti’s future. Our unions have been fighting for this for years and resisting the privatization of our national assets.”—Dukens Raphael
