Tax Cuts

At a time when the Federal government of Stephen Harper is promoting corporate tax cuts that take $14B in revenue per year out of circulation, and the Provincial government is allowing $2.4B in corporate tax cuts per year effective Canada Day (Corporate Day?), we are hearing that there is not enough money for: Public Services, Education, Healthcare, Transit, City Infrastructure, and Climate Change issues.  Canada already has the lowest corporate tax rates.

$1B is being spent on a one week summit in downtown Toronto.  The agenda and the discussion need to be re-directed to discover better ways of managing our financial resources.  The Toronto & York Region Labour Council is currently undertaking a colourful campaign to bring these issues to the public’s attention. For more information, and for an ability to download the complete set of posters, or to send a message to Prime Minister Harper or Premier McGuinty, go to www.labourcouncil.ca.

ETT PAC has completed the compilation of the submitted School Evaluation Surveys.

Results are posted in two formats: alphabetical order and numerical order. Members are encouraged to reference these survey results when contemplating potential transfers. If there are still survey results that are coming in, check for periodic updates.

The survey results will be on the ETT website throughout the Transfer Process.

Support political action in your school’s community and apply for funding up to $500

The Political Action Committee (PAC) of ETT recognizes that political action takes many forms and we would like to support teachers who are working within their school communities, or within the greater Toronto community, to have a positive impact on the well-being of those communities, with a special focus on issues of positive social change.

Political Action in school communities may include: teachers lobbying for a crossing guard; participating in an anti-violence march; working on an environmental issue; lobbying against disruptive neighbourhood retail intrusions; supporting a local non-profit organization that works with the students and families on issues of poverty; organizing petition signings; “education” forums for neighbourhoods; lobbying for local community needs; or working for organizations that actively support public education.  These initiatives can incur expenses such as childcare for meetings, printing, advertising, equipment and/or permits for space.

The Political Action Committee will support teacher political activism by offering three separate grants of up to $500.  If you are an ETT member and are currently engaged in supporting or working on an initiative that will strengthen the social fabric of the greater community, please submit an application to PAC for review.

Applications will be reviewed by PAC for approval.  A maximum of three applications will be approved.  All applicants will be notified.

Thank you to all who work to make a difference and to affect progressive change.
