 For Summer Curriculum Courses within the ETFO Summer Academy 2010

ETFO is seeking course leaders for the ETFO Summer Academy 2010 to be held during July and August 2010.  These three-day courses will be held in co-operation with ETFO locals.  They will be unique courses with an ETFO ‘edge’.  Our 2010 program will include many workshops with a significant focus on grade specific courses across various subject areas as they have proven to be very popular in previous years.

Applicants for the position of course leader should have the following:

active membership in ETFO;

sound awareness of adult learning principles;

an awareness and understanding of current initiatives (e.g. instruction, assessment, and differentiation);

a thorough knowledge of effective instructional strategies and assessment practices;

extensive experience in presenting professional development courses for elementary teachers; and

demonstrated commitment to equity principles and their integration in course content.

Course leaders will receive the following:

a planning and teaching fee for service;

travel, accommodation, and dependent care costs (within ETFO guidelines);

new presenters will attend a one-day training session in June, 2010;

returning presenters will participate in a team teleconference prior to teaching the course; and

an enriching and rewarding leadership opportunity to work with elementary teachers from across Ontario in this provincial ETFO program.

We encourage and support a team approach for the facilitation of Summer Academy courses.  New presenters are encouraged to consider the option of instructing a course with a professional colleague.  Facilitating a course can be a meaningful professional learning experience for course leaders too!  Leaders who have presented at Summer Academy have said:

Teaching a Summer Academy was tremendous professional development, as it provided an opportunity to discuss and share strategies and resources with other educators from across the province.”

“Leading Summer Academies has been an outstanding experience in terms of organization, support, professional learning, passion, and collegiality.”

“Working and sharing with other teachers reminds me that the answer is always in the room and that I can continue to grow as a professional. Leading ETFO courses always reminds me of why I got in to teaching...to make a difference in the world.”

ETFO is looking forward to offering a variety of courses to address the professional needs of many of its members again this summer.  Feedback from participants has provided us with insight into the topics that are of interest to our members.  Some suggestions have been included for you to consider.

Grade Specific Workshops

Our 2010 program will continue to include a significant focus on grade specific sessions across the province.   These sessions provide teachers of specific grades with the opportunity to explore the curriculum, management, classroom organization, and assessment for their grade in great depth.   They are very popular with our members and help them plan and prepare for the upcoming school year.
