Schools in Don Valley East (Ward 17) and Scarborough-Agincourt (Ward 20)
TDSB Trustee by-elections will be held on February 27, 2012 to fill two seats formerly occupied by Michael Coteau and Soo Wong, who were both recently elected as MPPs.
The outcome of the by-election will impact teachers across Toronto, as trustees make decisions on budgets and school closures.
ETT is calling on teachers to support and to vote for our endorsed candidates in their campaigns.
ETT has endorsed a candidate in each ward: Mary Hynes (Don Valley East) and Sam Sotiropoulos (Scarborough-Agincourt). We encourage teachers who live in these wards to vote for them on February 27. All interested candidates were interviewed by a panel representing ETT, OSSTF, and CUPE 4400 through the Campaign for Public Education. Both Mary and Sam are strong advocates for public education.
The basic boundaries for each ward are described below. To see exact maps of the wards, visit http://www.toronto.ca/elections.
Mary Hynes - Don Valley East (Ward 17)
Mary Hynes is a retired elementary Special Education Teacher with 25 years of experience in the Scarborough and Toronto District School Boards. Mary retired to community activism and supply teaching secondary students.
She and her husband raised and adopted a son with cerebral palsy and autism. Mary is currently Chair of the Older Women’s Network, Ontario’s advocacy organization for mid-life and older women and has been a vocal critic of proposed service cuts in the City of Toronto.
She has been a resident of the Ward for more than 8 years after living in Flemingdon Park for over 30 years.
We need as many Mary T. Hynes in this city as we can get —– people with passion, patience and a commitment to fighting for the larger good.
