December 20, 2013 is an unpaid, non-working day for permanent contract teachers. This unpaid day stems from the ETFO Memorandum of Understanding appended to 2012–2014 collective agreements.
It is important to note that December 20th is a working day for Long-Term Occasional Teachers (LTOs), ESPs, PSPs, and DECEs.
Since the Ministry of Education’s school year calendar fails to identify December 20th as an unpaid day for permanent contract teachers, there is concern that parents won’t be informed about why these teachers are absent from school that day.
ETFO President Sam Hammond has written to directors of education requesting that school boards amend the school calendar on board websites to clarify that December 20th is an unpaid day and inform parents through a newsletter and other communications. Some public boards have already adopted this communications plan and ETFO is requesting other boards to follow suit.
